Clay Collage is a series using hand-painted elements over collage.
Starting with vintage file folders, I used collage to construct the structure of each piece. painted over it and then pulled off parts of the collage to reveal negative space and added texture where the paper had torn. I then went back in and used paint to accentuate or remove parts of the design, blending all of the layers into a cohesive whole.
This series marked the first time I had used both collage and painting together and surrendered to the uncertainties of destruction to construct a new framework in which to work. It was also one of the first times I used Acryla Gouache in my work. It’s a media staple for me now due to its flat matte finish and opaque nature.
Anthropologie picked Clay Collage IV for their Fall 2025 Collection. They did remove the vintage metal tab in the print file for practical purposes.
